In the hospital cafeteria, Ragnar is talking to an old comrade about his return and the future. Nine months of recovery are nearly over; yet their quiet conversation keeps circling back to things that are harder to discuss. Why is he so certain he must return? What happened that night — the moment after which any mention of the future began to sound like a memory of those who never got to see it?

The answers are lying hidden within his own memories. Beneath the routine talk of work emerges an experience where a single mistake could come at a terrible cost and where the right decision didn’t always look the way he had been taught it should. What drove Ragnar to learn not to cling to a single plan? Why didn’t the losses he endured stop him — and what did they teach a man who chose to press on regardless?

That is how the “reverse azimuth” is itself working: to understand where Ragnar has ended up, one sometimes needs to look not forward, but back — to the moments that transformed his way of thinking and his approach to taking responsibility for outcomes. The past is not over here; it introduces a new dimension to the conversation in the hospital, while the present compels a re-evaluation of the cost of decisions already made
