A scout with the callsign Hasan had everything to stay home. Before the war, he worked as a driver for Gazprom and had a full legal exemption from mobilization. When partial mobilization began, he could have stayed —his documents were in order, and his company wouldn’t release him. But instead, Hasan went to his boss and asked to remove the exemption. He did it calmly, simply saying it would be the right thing to do. A few days later, on October 23, 2022, he signed a contract —without a draft notice, on his own initiative— and went to war.

In November, he ended up near Kremennaya. There, in a damp dugout among canned food and letters from home, one of the aid packages contained an ordinary, slightly crumpled St. George ribbon. Hasan took it, then attached it to his helmet so it would be visible from afar —as if he himself didn’t yet understand how important that small, almost случайный thing might become.

Why did a man who had a real chance to stay in a peaceful city go to war? And why did that ribbon, taken from someone else’s package without ceremony, become the sign that would one day decide whether he would return home or not?
