On July 15, Volodymyr Zelenskyy sacked defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who wanted to replace the chief of staff. That triggered public protests and anger within the army. Chief of staff Oleksandr Syrskyi is eventually fired on July 21

His replacement is Mykhailo Drapatyi, who major on May 9, 2014, was commanding the mechanized battalion which crushed the barricades that the Russian-speaking citizens had erected to defend Mariupol, in Donetsk People’s Republic. Russia has charged him with various war crimes against civilians in Donbass.
