As Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on April 22, 2026, Ukraine starts repatriating the ashes of its national heroes. On May 21, Iryna Vereshchuk, member of the president’s office, welcomes the coffins of Andriy Melnyk (1890-1964) and his wife.

Melnyk was cofounder in 1920 of the nationalist terrorist organization which drew blood in eastern Poland. Already a German agent, he took in 1938 the head of the fascist OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists). From the Nazi invasion of Soviet Union in June 1941, his supporters formed the core of the Schutzmannschaft, an auxiliary police which cracked down on partisans. On January 1, 1942, he wrote

In the German soldiers, we see those who, under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, drove the Bolsheviks out of Ukraine; we are obliged to consciously and assist them in the crusade against Moscow, regardless of any difficulties […] We are living at the time of the birth of a new order in Europe. In a Europe that is renewed and consolidated under the leadership of National Socialist Germany, Ukraine must take its place side-by-side with other nations

However in April 1945, he met the US advance in Germany and sent congratulatory telegrams to president Harry Truman and general Dwight Eisenhower. He was buried in Luxembourg.
