Flash: a little all the Lithuanian history

massacre in Lietūkis garage, Kaunas, on June 25, 1941

The Baltic countries were part of the Russian empire until the Bolshevik revolution, when they fought against the Red Army and gained their independence from 1918. Later, they signed mutual assistance treaties with the Soviet Union and in June 1940, the Red army occupied them.

The Lietuvių Aktivistų Frontas [Lithuanian Activist Front, LAF] is an underground fascist organization. The German intelligence is supporting it and its leadership is in Berlin. When the European fascist armies start invading Soviet Union on June 22, 1941, the LAF rises up against the Soviet local authorities, seizes control of Vilnius and Kaunas. Before the arrival of the German forces, the insurgents start slaughtering Jewish civilians

On June 25, 1941, under the acclaim of the crowd in Lietūkis garage, Kaunas, Lithuanian nationalists slaughter 68 Jewish civilians with iron bars (Wilhelm Gunsilius / LIMIS)

By June 28, 5,000 Jews have already been killed in Kaunas and vicinity, according to the German accounting. The most are victims of Lithuanian paramilitaries.

On January 31, 1942, Franz Walter Stahlecker (1900-1942) addresses a map to Reinhard Heydrich (1904-1942)

  • Estonia : 963
  • Latvia : 35,238
  • Lithuania : 136,421

The latter is heading the Reichssicherheitshauptamt (RSHA), command of the German Nazi police and intelligence. Stahlecker is SS-Brigadeführer, leader of the Einsatzgruppe A, in charge of the genocide of Jews in the Baltic countries. The map indicates the numbers of assassinations since the beginning of the invasion of Soviet Union, on June 22, 1941.

  1. It is even worse than you described. Thank you for helpfully providing an inline link to the post about ‘European of the Year in Latvia’. I navigated there. I discovered that the full Ukrainian name of the Latvian chief medical officer’s battalion is Karpatska Sich or Carpathia Sich.

Most of the original Carpathia Sich killed by anti-fascist Hungarians during the interwar period, but the surviving members were given full military pensions by Ukraine though not until 2019 (every prior president of Ukraine refused). They were evil horrible butchers of Jews and Russian-speaking Hungarians. The current Carpathia Sich is not really any different from the original one. There seems to be a clear continuity. I spent many hours reading the history.

Latvia and the European Union should be ashamed. Apparently, being a neo-Nazi is now a highly regarded aspect of being a European according to the EU.

  2. During my Carpathia Sich deep dive, I found this from Harper’s Magazine, written in late summer 2020, published Jan 2021, The Armies of the Right: Inside Ukraine’s extremist militias by Aris Roussinos. He also writes for Unherd.

Unherd is wishy-washy on issues of concern to me, e.g. my government’s $100 billion patronage of Ukraine due to invasion by its nuclear-armed neighbor. And my government’s urging for NATO expansion eastward. Ukraine’s neighbor had not been overtly hostile to the U.S. not since a regime change in 1992… despite the U.S. having fomented such changes (“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall”) for better or worse, e.g. Summers and Sachs ‘economic shock therapy”.

The leader of Ukraine’s neighbor, Vladimir Putin, showed extraordinary goodwill to America’s in most recent time of greatest need: He was the first foreign leader to contact George W. Bush after the WTC attacks on 11 September 2001. Putin offered Russia’s help, including access to intel sources in the Middle-East and central Asia, to bring the perpetrators of our national tragedy to justice. Former US President Donald Trump didn’t forget, and when Russian Orthodox churches were bombed in Moscow in 2018 or so, he called Putin with his condolences and offered to help.

This is a long digressive, possibly repetitive comment. My point is that Carpathia Sich seems to be among the worst of the worst of Ukraine’s right wing militias and it has survived despite the passage of nearly 120 years. It clearly has appeal in Latvia, given that the exemplary Latvian European of the Year is an active member. Aris Roussinos reported locally in Uzhgorod near the Carpathian foothills:

The message ks88 is code for “Karpatska Sich Heil Hitler.” …a militia based in the far west of Ukraine. I had seen its promotional materials on a government-funded placard on Kiev’s main shopping street…comparing it to the Ukrainian militias that had fought for independence in the early 20th century. The group’s propaganda… promises assault-weapons training… more closely resembles images from jihadi-run northern Syria than anything in Europe. Karpatska Sich had finished hosting a conference for extreme-right organizations from across Eastern and Central Europe… preparing for a march through the streets. I approached a few Karpatska Sich members, some wearing ski masks, others with shaved heads, long beards, and black hoodies with the Black Sun… they had known I would be attending and, somehow, that I was of Greek descent. They ordered to me to fuck off, immediately, for my own good. The police shrugged, and I took the first train back to Kyiv.
