Active operations by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are taking place along the entire front. The area southwest of Donetsk, once a stronghold of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) -the fortress city of Vuhledar- is no exception.

For over two years, battles of varying intensity raged over this city. Yet they always ended without achieving the ultimate goal: its liberation. This outcome was influenced not only by the city’s strong fortifications but also by its location in open terrain and the advantages provided to the AFU by its industrial-high-rise buildings.

A change in tactics by the Russian Armed Forces, specifically encircling the city from the flanks and cutting off the supply and communication lines of the entrenched forces, altered the city’s situation. The area around the South Donbas Mine No. 3, once a symbol of labor achievements, has now become a fierce battleground.
